Nagamachi Samurai District: Discover Kanazawa’s Charm and Edo-Era Elegance

Nagamachi Buke Yashiki(長町武家屋敷) is a tourist attraction located in the center of Kanazawa City, just a 5-minute walk from the Korinbo bus stop. The area is characterized by its historic streets and tranquil atmosphere, where modern urban life and the essence of the Edo period coexist harmoniously. Visitors can experience the rich history and culture of Kanazawa firsthand here.

Historical Background

The history of the area traces back to Maeda Toshiie, who founded the Kaga Domain. After serving Oda Nobunaga in Owari, Maeda Toshiie moved to Kanazawa via Noto, laying the groundwork for the Kaga Domain.

Nagamachi Buke Yashiki was a district where mid- and high-ranking samurai of the Kaga Domain resided. Onosho Canal, drawn from the Saigawa River, flowed through the properties and was integrated into the garden landscapes as kyokusui streams(曲水).

This setting added a touch of refinement to the daily lives of the samurai. Today, visitors can still see remnants of this era in the earthen walls, nagaya gates, and narrow stone-paved streets.

Seasonal Highlights and Historical Sites

One of the highlights of Nagamachi Buke Yashiki is its seasonal scenery. In spring, fresh greenery adorns the gardens, while vibrant autumn leaves add color in the fall. Winter brings traditional elements such as “komogake” straw mats and yukitsuri snow ropes, creating picturesque scenes.

At the Nomura Family Samurai Residence, visitors can admire a stunning house and garden, which has earned two Michelin stars and attracts many domestic and international tourists. The restored nagaya gate and pond garden at the Former Takada Family Residence are also open to the public, while the Kanazawa Ashigaru Museum offers insights into the lives of foot soldiers.

Additionally, the area features Edo-period defensive structures, such as cranked narrow streets and samurai windows, providing unique historical insights.

Local cuisine can be savored at kappo restaurants and cafés, offering a taste of Kanazawa’s rich culinary heritage. A visit to these establishments enhances the sightseeing experience.

Preservation and Unique Atmosphere

Nagamachi Buke Yashiki is designated as a Traditional Environment Preservation Area and Landscape District, ensuring the preservation of its historical Edo-period charm.

Visitors can enjoy the beauty of each season and immerse themselves in a valuable cultural and historical experience. The area’s unique atmosphere provides a memorable journey into the past.

When visiting Kanazawa, be sure to explore this evocative district and fully enjoy its timeless allure.
